What To Expect When Caring For A Bird – The Best Kind of Pet!

Friday, February 27th, 2009
Bird Care Guide asked:

If you believe birds are captivating creatures, then we have something in common! There are many birds that make terrific pets, while some of them just need to be left out in their natural environment. There is a pet bird out there for every bird lover. There are some individuals that enjoy large birds, while other people just enjoy little canaries that sit in their cage singing pretty tunes all day. Whatever you do, you should make sure you are completely prepared to take on the responsibility of a pet. If you have any doubts about taking in a pet or you are away from your home for long periods of time, then you may want to reconsider your plans of getting a bird–or any other pet. As you read this article, you will earn what to expect when caring for a bird.

Some of those wonderful creatures are very colorful, while the others are almost humorous. If you know about the type of bird you are looking for as a pet, then you should have a perception of what to expect from your new pet. This means you will need to do a proper amount of research on the bird before you bring it home. Try to look for a basic bird guide online.

When you get this pet, as long as you are ready to take on the responsibility of having a pet, we know you are going to be very happy. This is because birds make great companions. You will find your bird willing to do a lot of the things you do. In fact, when you take a shower, you bird may even want to be there with you!

When you’re eating, your bird may wish to watch you, and in many cases, they’ll attempt to eat from your dinner plate. Can you believe that some birds will repeat everything you say? Some birds are so intelligent that you will fid yourself able to understand complete sentences–which actually make sense!

You should make sure you put your bird in a cage that has a lot of room. This is especially important for those birds that spend a great deal of time in their cage. Your bird is going to require plenty of room to move about. Basically, if your bird is not able to stretch his wings and flap them without hitting the sides of the cage, then the cage is too small and you should get a new one. You might also try to gather information regarding accessories for birds, so that you are better prepared to meet your bird’s needs. Now that you know what to expect when caring for a bird, do you think you’re ready?

Tips for Your Pet Birds First Month Home

Monday, February 23rd, 2009
Stacy Richford asked:

For any new pet moving to a new home can be a very traumatic experience and in some cases even more so for a pet bird. Many times if bird was hand fed as a baby it may have stronger attachments then other birds. However if you take the time setting up your birds new environment properly with some extra care, it will a bit easier for your pet bird to make the adjustment to it’s new home.

One of the most important things you should first do when you bring your new bird home is to place its cage in an area that does not have an over abundance of activity or confusion. Even though we are trying to make sure our new friend doesn’t feel like he is caught up in the middle of all the household action. We also want to make sure that he does not feel all alone by putting him in some unused room by him self. Ideally you want to find a spot in your home where he can still interact with you, but there won’t be constant loud noises or lots of sudden movements that can continually startle him.

In situations where you already have another bird in your home, it would be best to segregate your new arrival for about thirty days. The reason you want to do this is to help ensure that if your new bird has an infectious disease, you won’t infect your original bird. When creating a quarantine for your bird, it would be best to keep him on floor in a completely different room of the house. Also make sure to keep their food and water dishes apart and do not interchange them even after washing. If your home has a central air conditioning system, you may have difficulty being able to ensure a true quarantine. Since these kinds of air conditioning system employ air duct systems which carry the air from one room to other rooms in the house. Regardless it is still a good idea to quarantine the new bird than immediately putting exposing him to your original pet even if you have air ducts.

You should also make sure that any new bird you bring home is in good health. So be sure to take him to your local avian veterinarian for a general check up. Your veterinarian will be able to check and make sure that your new pet bird is free of any contagious diseases, worms or bacterial infections. This is even more important in cases were you have a hand fed baby bird, the reason being is that if the bird wasn’t properly hand fed it is at a higher risk for having a bacterial infection.

When ever you bring a new bird home you should closely monitor their eating habits during their initial adjustment period. If you notice that your bird doesn’t seem to be eating at all during the initial twenty four hours, you should try and offer him some spray millet. Spray millet is pretty much a dessert for birds. Another option is to offer him a whole grain cereal which may coax a frightened bird into eating. If you just brought home a newly weaned baby bird and he is not eating and is also making various squalling noises, your new bird may have regressed some and will need to be hand fed slightly longer. In these situations call your breeder for assistance.

If for some reason you cannot get in contact with your breeder, odds are you can buy some hand feeding formula from your local pet shop. To use the formula simply mix up a tiny quantity of the hand feeding formula until it reaches a consistency close to that of pudding. Then offer some of the mixture to your bird by putting some of the formula on a plastic spoon. If all is well he should eat it right off the spoon.

Lastly, you should not be afraid to interact with your new pet bird, just make sure you don’t get out of hand and overdo it. At first you should only try to work with him for 10 minutes at a time and no more. If he continually flies away and you notice your self having to chase and catch him, Just put him away back in his cage for a bit until he starts to calm down. Every time you chase and catch your bird it cause him some stress, which is something we are trying to minimize for our new friend.

What To Do When Your Pet Bird Gets Sick

Saturday, February 14th, 2009
Lee Dobbins asked:

Like other pets, your bird can get sick but unlike other pets your birds illness can become serious, even life-threatening, very quickly. If your bird is acting even the slightest bit ill you should get him to your veterinarian right away since birds can go downhill very fast.

Sometimes, however you can get your bird to the veterinarian right away so here are some steps you can take to help care for your sick bird.

first off, you want make sure that you sick bird stays warm. Keep his cage out of many drafts and you might want to try using a grow light ( the same kind you use to grow plants) aimed at the cage but placed in such a way so that your bird can get out of the direct light if he gets too hot.

If you find that your bird is just sitting on the bottom of the cage and is to sick to even sit on his perch, then you might want to move into a hospital cage for better safety. A glass aquarium can make a great hospital cage. Put a towel or some newspaper on the bottom of the cage and put shallow bowls of food and water where your bird can get to it. Newspaper can be kind of slippery so you want to put something that has a little more grit like paper towels on the bottom so that your bird isn’t sliding around.

If you can get a freestanding low perch in the aquarium this is perfect in case you bird wants to perch. Position the light so that It shines and to only one side so that the bird can get out of it if he gets too hot.

if you don’t have an anti-aquarium readily available than you can make a few changes to your bird’s regular cage. Cover most of it with a towel to keep in the heat input the birds food and water dishes on the bottom of the cage where he can get to them. Also, if you have a freestanding parts put this on the bottom two.

You’ve got to make sure that your bird keeps up his strength as he can easily become weakened by lack of food and water. electrolytes can give your sick bird some quick energy and if he is a hand fed bird then you might see if he’ll try taking a few drops of a sports drink from a spoon or eyedropper. If you have a hand feeding formula ready mix that up with some of the sport strength instead of water and see If you’ll take that. if you bird is eating on his own make sure that he’s getting enough and maybe offer him a tree like a spray millet so that he can get some quick energy. Make sure he also gets enough water.

If you bird is bleeding you need to provide emergency care before you can get them to the vet. Look him over to see where the blood is coming from. While most others do not bleed new feathers that are still growing can bleed. These occult blood feathers and if you do find that the blood is coming from one you’ll need to pull the feather out completely. It’s a good idea to cover your birds head with a towel while you are doing this. If it’s not a feather that’s bleeding check his nails and toes and if it’s coming from they are applied to styptic powder to the cut. If you don’t have styptic powder handy you can use flour In a pinch.

The key to successfully treating your sick bird is getting him to the vet at the first sign of illness. Be sure that you’re always watching your bird in checking him for signs of illness. If you notice that your bird Is acting a little different or even look sick it’s best to call your bet and get them in right away. It may be that nothing is really wrong with your bird but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Is somebody stealing my pet birds?

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009
Mia C asked:

I had twenty zebra finches in one big cage in my back garden. Suddenly there are only 7 or nine left. There is no dead bodies, but there is no physical proof someone has snuck into my yard and stolen them. My room leads right outside to the backyard and I hear thudding noises and noises that rat or any animal cannot make.

Are there any other ways my sweet pet birds are gone? The cage is secure so nothing can get in or out.

What you need to know about keeping a goat pet

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009
jamiehanson asked:

To keep pets is a wonderful idea but one must always remember to take good care of the pet as it is a great responsibility just like taking care of your young one. People have their own choices of keeping a pet, they can keep either a pet dog, or a pet cat, or a pet bird, or a pet goat. There are a number of animals you can choose as your pet, but then if you really want to have a pet you must know how to take good care of a new member of your family as it completely depends on you for its proper health and growth. To keep a pet goat is an excellent idea as it is of great use to the owner. It is well known that ‘goat gives us milk’, and to get a constant supply of fresh and wholesome goats milk you need to ensure that your goat is in good health and is properly taken care of. Well there are certain important things that one needs to know about keeping a goat pet, just like any other pet it needs to be fed with fresh and healthy food and maintained and nurtured in a hygienic environment so as to help it stay away from diseases. Getting proper medical attention with regular health check-ups is a must for your pet goat to fend off any diseases, and to lead a healthy life and give you proper amount of milk and healthy kids. Right from the day one, you need to know what you should feed your goat to help it grow healthy. Just like a human being, your goat too needs to have a nutritious diet which is a prerequisite. Lack of proper nutrients may lead to lower resistance against diseases and your goat is likely to suffer from a number of goat diseases and may give invitation to parasites, which further leads to complexities of its health and growth, hence it is recommended that your goat food should contain all the vital proteins, vitamins and minerals. You local Veterinarian can give you the information you need to learn about the best diet for keeping a goat, or buy yourself a good reference manual about goat keeping online. An improper diet not only affects the energy levels of your pet goat but also affects its size, development, performance and pregnancy. Your pet goat appears to be weak and pale if the diet is improper with insufficient hair growth and unhealthy muscular activity. You should maintain good fresh pasture or lawns for your goats to graze freely and comfortably. The grass should be fresh and clean away from any harmful insecticides and pesticides sprayed on it, you should also check for any dangerous weeds that might grow with the grasses which may cause harm to your lovely pet goats. With a proper care and balanced diet, your pet goat will surely grow with good health and remain active forever. Along with a proper diet, the surroundings where your pet goat is nurtured should also be considered. The environment in which it grows should be hygienic with proper temperature, sunshine, humidity and air. You need to pay particular attention to the best kind of shelter and indoor housing that must be provided for your pet. Your goat needs to have shelter from the worst inclement weather conditions, just like the would find for themselves in the wild. And fencing has a number of issues that you need to deal with to ensure it is safe and effective for your pet goats. Depending on the region where you stay, your pet goat must be raised accordingly to ascertain its proper growth and it should be free from infectious viral diseases. You should also be careful during its pregnancy and keep a regular check on its weight gain and other important hormonal changes that it goes through, consult a good veteran to help your pet deal all its health problems effectively. With all the above mentioned things well covered, you are sure to raise your favorite pet goat with all the necessary care and nourishment it needs. To be confident that you have all the knowledge you need you should get yourself a good online Guide for Keeping Goats.

Finding the Best Bird Supplies for your Bird

Joy Boothe asked:

Getting Appropriate Supplies For Your Particular Bird

One thing is certainly unmistakable, bird owners love their birds! As a lover of birds myself, I find that I do not always like to foce birds to be caged all day, I would like them to be able to discover and give them a sense of life in the wild without placing them in any harm. An easy approach to permit your bird to be free from the birdcage, and still be safe, is to get a playstand. Playtop cages and playstands offer your bird with the freedom of being out of the cage while still meeting their desire to explore and fly. Bird lovers everywhere have chosen playstands and playtop cages as an alternate location to enjoy the beauty, personalities and companionship of their pet birds.

The best bird cages are made out of stainless steel. While a little bit more pricey, the cages made of stainless steel can provide the durableness and security that will make them worth the extra cost. Higher quality bird cages don’t need to be replaced for a number of years and will provide your pet safety and comfort during its lifetime. You will discover that these bird cages are harder for your bird to escape from, easier to clean and don’t have lead or toxins that are often found in the construction of inferior birdcages. By investing in a quality bird cage, you’re promising your bird a life of comfort and protection.

Whether you have got Budgies or a Macaw Parrot sized bird, bird toys will supply countless hours of relaxation. A relaxed and happy bird enjoys a longer life and better health. A good toy will help your bird relax and unwind or even offer a challenge or some adventure. Be certain the bird toys you choose are made from high quality material like stainless steel. Don’t buy toys that may be toxic, broken, or easily swallowed, and toys that may entangle your bird. Not all toys are good for every breed of bird. A respectable pet supply store should help you pick the perfect toys for your bird.

We all recognize the value of choosing high quality bird supplies. But digging through numerous products and brand names can certainly be overwhelming at times. So where do you go to find birdcages that are the proper size and soundly built? Swings, bird toys or landing places that are long lasting, non-toxic and safe? You are better off finding an established company, one that understands and recognizes the needs of birds. You will want to look for one that is willing to back up their products. A reliable business will offer customer service to answer your questions and help you get the right product to meet the needs for your particular bird.

Decorative Dometop Victorian bird cages produce an exciting focus to nearly any kind of house. From the quaint, to the extraordinary, there is a cage for everybody’s taste. When choosing a home for your bird, find some time to find something that provides style and comfort as well as safety. Be sure that whatever you choose doesn’t have any toxic paints or finishes that might harm your pet. Stay clear of cages with parts that could break off or sharp edges. Most of all, be certain the birdcage you pick out is big enough so that your bird can be housed safely.

Bird Cages – What You Must Consider When Getting A Pet Bird

Thursday, February 5th, 2009
Susan Fielding asked:

The most important thing to consider before getting a pet bird is its cage, as it will be your pet’s home, so you want it to feel safe and comfortable. You will be responsible for providing your new pet with the proper amount of living space.

With so many different sizes, styles, colors, and price ranges of bird cages available on the market, you may find yourself a little confused. While it can seem that there’s an endless amount of cages to choose from, there are a few things that you will need to think about before purchasing a bird cage. The following should help you to narrow down your choice.

First of all you must determine where your new cage is to be located. It cannot be situated near windows or around drafts, and it must also be in an active area in your home, so that there is constant stimulation for your bird. This will also help your bird to gain a higher level of social development.

Next, you need to know what size your bird will end up being when it is fully grown. This of course will vary greatly on the type of bird you choose. Your bird needs to have plenty of space to move around and stretch its’ wings. Many owners of pet birds choose a roomy indoor aviary instead of the small traditional bird cages. It is important to remember, bird cages are not supposed to be prisons, but a safe environment and home for your pet.

Finally, you need to ensure you choose a well designed cage. Today’s bird cages are available in a variety of styles which include square, round, pagoda-shaped, and house-shaped. Custom bird cages are the best choice, and are available at most pet supply stores. They are made of many different materials, including wood, acrylic, stainless steel, metal, and iron. Steel bird cages are the easiest to clean and will not become chipped or faded.

You must also consider the toys that your bird will play with. Choose some colourful, interesting toys and accessories for entertainment, so that your bird will not become bored or stressed.

A good bird cage can be expensive, and the materials that the cage is made of have a lot to do with the price. You cannot compromise on the price if you want a good quality cage. Therefore your best option is to choose one that is the right size and is easy to clean and has lasting value.
